BUNGLING thieves escaped empty handed after ram-raiding the Shell garage shop in Wellington in the early hours of this morning.

Police believe the raiders drove a stolen 4x4 into the Spar stores in Longforth Road in an attempt to get at the cash machine inside.

But their ham-fisted raid came to an abrupt halt after the vehicle pushed shelves and a freezer in their way.

Police were soon on the scene and a chase followed as the would-be robbers fled north up the M5 in a second vehicle-leaving the 4x4 still inside the store.

The getaway car was abandoned in a field near Tetbury in Gloucestershire but no-one was arrested.

A nearby resident, who did not want to be named, said she was woken up just before 3am by noise in the street.

She said: "I looked out of my window and saw this 4x4 reversing into the shop. They took three or four attempts to get inside as the curb is quite high.

"It was very dark as all the garage lights were off but I saw a getaway car parked on the forecourt. It looked like a silver Audi.

"I also saw a man in a hoodie but he had his back to me so I couldn't see his face.

"I rang the police and I think other people were ringing too. There was a lot of noise with the alarm going off.

"Then the car raced off towards Taunton and the motorway."

The shop is owned by County Stores in Taunton who also have similar outlets in Williton and Curry Rivel.

A company spokesman said he hoped the garage would be back in business later today but could give no idea when the shop would re-open.
